trustfelled | Week 1

WEEK 1
Unfortunately (or fortunately, for those of you who decided he ranks at an 8 or higher) the Adjudicator has made an appearance and he doesn't seem to be lying about anything that's happening here. There's no way out. It seems like you're stuck here for the time being and the rules the Adjudicator told you about are still hanging in every room. While the Adjudicator himself is around, you'll be left up to your own devices – feel free to continue exploring and getting to know your fellow Competitors for the next several days. Should you want to eat something you're free to use the kitchen before 10PM, but after that the doors will be locked and no amount of fussing with the locks or trying to break them down will get them to budge.

You'll notice that the clock in the foyer goes off periodically, however. This will happen every morning at 7AM and again in the evenings at 10PM. You'll be able to hear it no matter what room you're in; it seems it's being piped in over that PA system in the walls. There isn't any punishment for sleeping through it, but you don't want to waste the day in bed, now do you?

(Unless you were out exploring all last night. In which case, go back to bed, damn.)

[Luca, on the other hand, is going for a more traditional (to him) breakfast of coffee and a pastry of some sort. He hasn't bothered to move out to the dining room, since he usually eats breakfast quickly anyway.

He does notice Katniss and her eating habits, and he raises an eyebrow at it. Because fruit is not really a breakfast food, where he is from.]

It's a bit early for lunch, isn't it?

[ Her nose wrinkles at the coffee, but she's interested in the pastry. She sure isn't going to snatch it from his hand, though. ~~Probably.~~ ]

This is still my breakfast.

Ah.

[Right. Different country, different eating habits.]

My apologies. Fruit is more of a lunch food, where I am from.

[He sees her eyeing his pastry though.]

Did you want one? I made a few, to test the oven out.

[ She shrugs off the apology. ]

Sure. What kind are they?

Just plain pastries. I did find some butter to put on them, though.

[He goes ahead and grabs one for her, as well as the butter and a butter knife.]

Usually we eat one of these and have a cup of coffee, right before work. Light breakfast, heavy dinners.

I don't like coffee. Too bitter.

They smell good, though. The pastries.

Well thank you, I do try. If coffee is too bitter though, what about hot chocolate? It's too sweet for my tastes, but many people seem to like it.

[ ...? ]

I've never had hot chocolate.

Well then! You're in for quite a treat.

[Don't mind him, he's going to get some milk warming on the stove while he gets the cocoa powder out.]

[ She's getting all kinds of stuff today, huh.

Katniss watches him curiously. ]

You're heating up the milk?

Well yes, it wouldn't be hot chocolate if it's not hot, now would it?

[He heats it to the point where it starts to bubble, but he is stirring it constantly, so the milk does not burn as it warms up. Next comes the cocoa powder, and then it is put into a mug and presented to Katniss.]

... Right.

[ She takes the cup and sniffs at it. It smells... delicious. Katniss takes a small sip, her eyes widening. ]

Wow. I've never had anything like it. [ Another sip. ] It's good. Really good.

[He smiles at that. It's nice to see her not quite so serious.]

My son loves it, so I have quite a bit of practice at making it.

[ ... So many of them have families. Her hands tighten around the mug. ]

I can tell. Can you put other stuff in it?

You can. Caramel is popular, as is peppermint. sometimes when I make it I will put actual chocolate shavings on top too.

[ Caramel, she's never had. Peppermint, though... ]

I want to try it. Both of them.

I think we can do that. One new kind every morning, with a new kind of pastry too.

I didn't know there were so many kinds of pastries. The bread back in Twelve doesn't look or smell anything like what you made.

Well, bread and pastries are a bit different from one-another. While they're both made from wheat, the other ingredients vary more.

Is Twelve a part of Panem?

[ Huh. Well. She's not a baker, so... ]

Yeah. District Twelve. We mine coal.

[ That's absolutely the most exciting thing about it. ]

So you're a coal miner? I honestly thought you were a student.

[ ... Wrong choice of words. ]

I'm not. But, I mean, I might be. [ Grimace. If she has to, she won't. ] In the future. If no one really has any skills after they're done with school, they go into the mines.

...ah. Limited opportunities, then.

[Luca hesitates for a moment, and he nervously fidgets with his hair. He is debating on how much he should say, but before too long he speaks up again.]

It was like that for many people, where I'm from. It's, ah, why I left my home country.

Really limited.

[ ... ]

Where'd you go?

A neighboring country. Remember the one I mentioned before, Warassa? There is a university there, one that is for the study of Sfeer Theory. That is where I went.
