Week 1

WEEK 1 Unfortunately (or fortunately, for those of you who decided he ranks at an 8 or higher) the Adjudicator has made an appearance and he doesn't seem to be lying about anything that's happening here. There's no way out. It seems like you're stuck here for the time being and the rules the Adjudicator told you about are still hanging in every room. While the Adjudicator himself is around, you'll be left up to your own devices – feel free to continue exploring and getting to know your fellow Competitors for the next several days. Should you want to eat something you're free to use the kitchen before 10PM, but after that the doors will be locked and no amount of fussing with the locks or trying to break them down will get them to budge. You'll notice that the clock in the foyer goes off periodically, however. This will happen every morning at 7AM and again in the evenings at 10PM. You'll be able to hear it no matter what room you're in; it seems it's being piped in over that PA system in the walls. There isn't any punishment for sleeping through it, but you don't want to waste the day in bed, now do you? (Unless you were out exploring all last night. In which case, go back to bed, damn.) [ Katniss must be a masochist, because she keeps going into the music room. Music isn't a bad thing, it's just... it reminds her of Dad.

She wonders if he'd be happy she's trying to learn. ]

That's a nice song.

[destinycalling]

I wrote it about a stupid boy. [She . . . can't remember which one, but she knows it was about one of them.] But it's the first song I ever wrote so even when I stopped liking the boy, I still played the song.

[flagitate]

[ People who can write songs... wow. Katniss doesn't have a talent like that. ]

How long ago did you write it?

[destinycalling]

[How long ago did she? It doesn't feel like that long ago but . . . It had to have been a couple years ago. Wasn't that the last time she . . .]

Probably freshman year? So, three years ago, give or take.

[flagitate]

Huh.

[ She isn't sure what freshman year is, but she'll take her word for it. ]

What else do you write songs about?

[destinycalling]

Surfing, mainly. [Mack has like two hobbies.] Sometimes my family, but . . . I don't have a father and my mom passed away so. It's just me, my grandfather, and my Aunt Antoinette.

Makes for kind of depressing songs, you know?

[flagitate]

[ ... Ah. Katniss gets the thing about her parents. Her mother's good as gone, and her dad-- ]

Yeah. [ Surfing. ] So have you talked to Brady about surfing? He's pretty into it.

[destinycalling]

We're from the same place, actually. [Nevermind that they'd never talked before they got here.] It's kind of weird that we both ended up in here, but. Nothing much about this seems logical.

[flagitate]

[ Huh. ]

So you knew each other before coming here, or--

[destinycalling]

Not really? He comes by my grandfather's shop sometimes, to buy surf wax or whatever, and I think we go to the same school, but we don't really . . . run in the same circles.

[Like, at all.]

[flagitate]

I get what you mean. [ Shrug. ] There are a ton of kids I don't really know back home.

[ She says it quietly enough, and she doesn't quite look at Mack. ]

[destinycalling]

[. . . okaaaaay. Mack's not gonna pry into that one, because it seems kind of like something you gotta get a social link for.

How about a totally unsubtle topic change?]

So, do you play any instruments?

[flagitate]

[ ... Probably a good idea. ]

No. I messed with the piano a little bit, but I don't really... play.

[destinycalling]

Do you want to learn? [She can teach, but y'know. Some people don't necessarily want to.] My grandfather always says knowing how to play an instrument is the most important skill besides knowing how to surf, but it's honestly not very useful.

[flagitate]

[ ... That's... a surprise, but Katniss nods. ]
