WEEK 1 Despite how unhelpful she seems, one thing has become very clear after talking to the Transmitter: there's no way out of here. It seems like you're stuck here for the time being and the rules the Transmitter told you about are still hanging in every room. You'll be left up to your own devices now – feel free to continue exploring and getting to know your fellow Patients for the next several days. Should you want to eat something you're free to use the kitchen before 10PM, but after that the doors will be locked and no amount of fussing with the locks or trying to break them down will get them to budge. However, your wake-up call in the morning isn't exactly a pleasant one - loud bursts of static over the intercom can be heard early in the morning, pulsing almost as though it's following some sort of pattern, though it isn't possible to discern exactly what that pattern might be. This will happen every morning at 7AM and again in the evenings at 10PM. You'll be able to hear it no matter what room you're in. There isn't any punishment for sleeping through it, but you don't want to waste the day in bed, now do you? (Unless you were out exploring all last night. In which case, go back to bed, damn.) PATIENTS REMAINING: 30

[The American name feels a little strange on her tongue, but she'll get used to it. She introduces herself in turn then, with pride.]

You as well. I'm glad to find someone else capable of keeping a level head.

[Nodding. And oh, actually, she just remembered something else.]

Your profile said you were an optometrist, yes?

[She might have gotten a few details of his profile mixed up.]

[He laughs at that]

Therapist, actually. I do have an interest in optometry though!

Oh! Really? Those fields are so different.

[doctorize]

Therapy is my primary field, but optometry is an interest of mine, among other medical subjects occasionally.

[Oh, that's fair enough. Though thinking about it and this entire conversation, Rin also starts to giggle.]

... Hmm? What's so funny?

Oh, I just realized the irony. A guy who's squinting all the time is the one into optometry!

[That's great, but she thinks she can guess now how it started.]

How old were you when you got glasses? I bet your interest started there.

[For a moment, Danny looks a little caught off guard by the question, his left eye actually more open now. (The right stays closed, however.)]

How old was I? Let's see... I think I might have been a teenager when I started wearing glasses? Though I'm not sure I would say that my interest in the subject started there.

Is that so? So what was the big event? I wonder what made Daniel Dickens wake up one day and think "looking deeply into people's eyes is cool".

[Because it sounds a little boring to her. Unless...]

Or maybe it was a smooth pick-up line?

No, nothing like that! I'm not sure I would even call something like that a "big event"?

How surprisingly boring...

[But then she laughs at herself.]

Then again, I'm not one to talk. I like polishing gemstones.

Really? What kind of gemstones?

[heritrix]

All kinds. Rubies, emeralds, sapphires, amethyst... So on and so forth.

Interesting! What about diamonds, pearls, alexandrite?

[heritrix]

Alexandrite, yes. Pearls I don't have much use for, and...

[She slumps here pitifully, seemingly depressed.]

Diamonds are so expensive compared to the rest. I don't get my hands on quality ones often. Just thinking about how to budget one makes me want to cry!

[... Does Rin need a shoulder pat of sympathy, because Danny will do so if allowed.]

[Oh my god, please do. Go the extra mile, Danny, and let her dry sob in your scrawny arms.

But no more seriously, which shoulder is he trying to pat, that is important for reasons.]

[Well since we're assuming that Rin is facing him here, it's probably her left shoulder that's getting pat?]

[Left shoulder, huh? Then that pat, despite how gentle it might be, is going to get an unexpected wince out of Rin actually, followed by a quick intake of air.]

[Haha, no. She's suddenly very lightheaded and glad she was already sitting down on this counter. But she's going to try her damndest to pretend she's not, just like she's been pretending all day.]

Y-Yeah, I'm fine! It's only a bruise I got snooping around in the dark. Jeez, you hit it in just the right spot.

Are you sure? If you're in pain, there are painkillers that you can get from our... ah, esteemed host here I believe.

[They did that for Nachetanya, they'd do the same for Rin too, right?]
