Week 1

WEEK 1 Unfortunately (or fortunately, for those of you who decided he ranks at an 8 or higher) the Adjudicator has made an appearance and he doesn't seem to be lying about anything that's happening here. There's no way out. It seems like you're stuck here for the time being and the rules the Adjudicator told you about are still hanging in every room. While the Adjudicator himself is around, you'll be left up to your own devices – feel free to continue exploring and getting to know your fellow Competitors for the next several days. Should you want to eat something you're free to use the kitchen before 10PM, but after that the doors will be locked and no amount of fussing with the locks or trying to break them down will get them to budge. You'll notice that the clock in the foyer goes off periodically, however. This will happen every morning at 7AM and again in the evenings at 10PM. You'll be able to hear it no matter what room you're in; it seems it's being piped in over that PA system in the walls. There isn't any punishment for sleeping through it, but you don't want to waste the day in bed, now do you? (Unless you were out exploring all last night. In which case, go back to bed, damn.) [ The mispronunciation isn't really a surprise, and Mahiru corrects it without a trace of anger. ]

Ma-hi-ru. And you're Brady, yes?

[ Her pronunciation of his name is more-or-less on the mark - but to be fair, his name is much easier. ]

Ma-hi-ru. [He repeats it, like he's turning it over in his mouth, and then nods. Alright, he can get used to that.] Yeah, that's me.

[Huh... She really doesn't look 24. Oh well. He should make conversation, she's come on into his room after all.]

As well as I can be, given the situation.

[ It's... sort of a shitty situation, really, but Mahiru is adjusting. ]

... And admittedly a little bored. I'm not a musician, so there's not much to do in here.

[You'd think he would have realized something like this before, but no, her response gives him pause and he just...slowly puts his journal down.]

Oh. I never even thought that other people could be havin' trouble with that. Guess I really lucked out. That's rough, sorry.

[ Mahiru had been the one complaining, but at Brady's condolences she waves a dismissive hand. ]

Not at all. It's my own fault I'm bored. There's no reason I couldn't take this opportunity to learn.

[ ... that actually sounds kind of fun. Music is something that had been dismissed as unnecessary when she was younger, but there's no one here to stop her now. ]

[...Well! In that case! A smile snakes it's way onto Brady's face.]

What kinda instrument would you be interested in? I know my way around a few of them, so I could always lend a hand.

[The goal: Create a whole band with all thirty of them.]

[ This isn't something she's given any thought at all, and now that she has to deciding seems a bit difficult. ]

The piano, I think. I saw more books for it than any other.

Piano's a good choice! Pretty good for someone just starting out, you know? I'm actually trying to teach Cilan a little.

[Trying. Emphasis on trying. They're both learning as they go.]

You can play more than one instrument? That's quite impressive.

[meanttobe]

Not entirely. I'm mostly just focused on guitar, just learned how to do piano by ear so I could get good at the keyboard. ...And there's the drums, but that was mostly a rhythm thing? You kinda have to know your way around a few things if you wanna do mix your own stuff.

[middaymoon]

[ Now there's a phrase Mahiru doesn't recognize. She tilts her head a little, curious. ]

'Mix'?

[meanttobe]

Like, sound mixing. You've never heard of it? It's how a bunch of music gets made, especially if you're just playing by yourself.

[middaymoon]

[ At the question Mahiru shakes her head, though between his explanation and the word itself she thinks she gets the idea. ]

Is it like combining all the different parts into one song, even though they were recorded separately?

[meanttobe]

Yeah, just like that! You record, like, the guitar, and then the drums, add a little bass if you can, a counter-melody on guitar. That stuff. If you don't have a band but wanna make full songs, you have to know your way around a few instruments.

[middaymoon]

[ Hey, look at that! She figured out a normal person thing mostly on her own! ]

It must be pretty time consuming to learn multiple instruments. I understand it takes years of practice to master just one.

[meanttobe]

Oh yeah. I'm far from being a master at any of 'em, but I guess I can pick up new ones easier since I started so young? Plus it's just...fun for me.

[middaymoon]

[ Doing something just for fun isn't something Mahiru has much experience with, in all honesty. ]

Is it just a hobby for you, then?

[meanttobe]

Huh? What, no. I mean, it's a hobby, but it's not...just a hobby. It's my life. I surf, I play music. They're both what I love to do, what I wanna do as long as I'm alive.
