Week 3.

WEEK 3
Grace and Doug are dead. It seems that there isn't anything more to do but mourn your losses and try to move forward. The Transmitter's rules still hang in every room, a reminder of the only means of escaping this place.

But surely no one else will give into them, right?

Saturday is given to regrouping and rest; the static blares out early on Sunday, but at least there are no bodies to find today - it seems you're safe for now. The night before wasn't necessarily a peaceful one, however; you'll probably feel a bit groggy when you wake up, and it seems you've regained something that you didn't realize you'd lost...

Once again, however, it seems your efforts won't go unrewarded; another set of corridors have opened up, much in the same fashion as the other new area did last week. With them come new rooms to explore; maybe some of them will be to your liking.

Or perhaps it's better to say that hopefully some of them will; after all, if the Transmitter gets her way, you may be here for a very, very long time.

[Put on the spot, Sakura drops her stare as if chastised by an adult, and that's not far from the truth. She, uh... really didn't notice the time, and the fact her stomach suddenly claws at her for attention means George isn't kidding.]

I'm sorry, sometimes I get really engrossed in my practice. [She gestures awkwardly toward the range] I never expected a hospital to have an archery range, so I might've overdone it.

[ Well, if he is already being invited to look at the range, he may as well give another stare to the display of Sakura's incredible aim. ]

This looks like more than just school club skill and focus. Did you learn it for any special reason?

[... Yeah okay she grows a little red in the face]

Nii-san -- my older brother is apart of the archery club at my school, and sometimes I'd go to watch him and my upperclassmen practice. I guess I liked it so much that I decided to join when I became a freshman.

[She gives a delicate shrug] I practice every morning, and stay after class everyday.

[ George tilts his head as if to say are you sure you're not fighting in a war or something? but he lets the explanation slide. ]

You amassed an impressive amount of talent for just this. Terrifying even, in our context.

[Sakura? In a war?

Now that's just silly, George.]

... I wouldn't use this on anyone.

[Her eyebrows knit, more shocked than offended.]

Archery is only a sport, and one that helps clear the mind.

You say you wouldn't, but you could. And with ease from the looks of it.

[ He's totally using the 'I'm not implying anything, juuust stating facts' voice for this. ]

That might be good or bad for us, depending the future contexts.

You don't mince words, do you, George-san...

[And yet she can't work up anger at the statement.

Because maybe he's right.]

Being frank is more important now than ever, don't you think?

[ Big words about honesty from a man who never shows his eyes. ]

Don't worry, I don't find you any more or less suspicious as most people here. It's good to take inventory of weapon skills, is all.

Of course. Everyone is more than welcome to.

[Sakura doesn't seem concerned about it, already taking another arrow from her quiver, nocking it gently against bow string. She doesn't shoot it, just holds it there]

And it's okay. I think it's better not to trust anyone, just in case.

Smart girl.

[ He leans back against the wall of the shooting range, going silent to let her proceed with her next round of shots. Had this been any day after the motive, he might not have wanted to remain in the same space as Sakura with a weapon, but as of now he's blissfully unaware. ]

[Oh George. There will always be at least one person Sakura wants gone more than you at all times.

Though this time she stops in the middle of her set, glancing over to the man still watching him]

Would you like to try? [Has he ever shot an arrow before, she wonders.]

The crossbows are likely easier since all you have to do is aim.

[ .... offering him to try with weapons as well is an interesting move and somehow it makes Sakura gain a few points in George's book. ]

Aiming is one thing I should be decent at and I could prove it if the guns were functional... But ah well.

Might not be bad to familiarize myself with this was well. Do you have any prior experience with crossbows specifically?

No... I've only ever used a traditional bow. But I know crossbows are similar to guns in that it doesn't take as much strength to use them.

Huh.

Well, I know how to use a gun and you know how to use a bow. With combined knowledge, we should figure a crossbow out fairly easily.

[ THIS IS TOTALLY HOW IT WORKS.... ]

[Sakura feels like she just got a peek at George's brain and isn't sure what to do with this sudden knowledge.]

Y-yes! [As if George gave her an order, Sakura puts down her bow and quiver to jog over to the crossbows. They're not weapons she enjoys touching, even when they're unequipped with arrows, but she selects one she thinks would fit George's stature]

Will this one do?

[ George takes it off her hands and gives it a glance over. Truthfully, he has no idea if it will, but the heaviness seems... intuitively alright? ]

Doubt we have better options in any case.

[ He turns it in his hands some more. ]

It really looks like someone got angry about the invention of guns and decided to literally stick some more "traditional weapon" on top of one.

Oh -- it's actually very interesting.

[George has accidentally unlocked Nerd Sakura, who stands straighter like she's been picked to lecture to the class]

Crossbows were meant to replace the traditional bow and arrow because the latter required too much training - usually a person would have to be trained from birth to be a master in the craft.

But crossbows are heavier, and they still require some measure of training that the average user wouldn't want to commit to. When gunpowder became more widespread, they quickly replaced crossbows. After all, crossbows still require you to carry the darts around, while bullets are much, much smaller. You can shoot faster with guns, too.

[ Wow wow, he didn't expect her to just have the answer to this question ready. But now that she does, he listens with interest. ]

I side with history on that one, the gun is more convenient.

[ But this is... pretty cool to know about. ]

So is there anything specific you need to pay attention to when putting the arrow into this one?

Well...

[She's no master at crossbows, but after glancing at the mechanisms, the girl takes one of the arrows and slides it backward (the business end pointed away from them, naturally), until it's secure and the bowstring is taunt]

You want to make sure the bow string and arrow click into place, it seems - otherwise the arrow will shoot off prematurely, before you have a chance to aim.

[ George watches carefully and when she's done traces the arrow was his fingers to check for himself. ]

Wouldn't want to damage this place any more, yes.

[ With the crossbow now prepared, he steps forward to point it at the shooting range. It takes a few shifts around until he feels the way he's holding it is actually balanced. The grip around the shaft comes naturally, but the weight difference is jarring for the first moment.

For a while he's silent, aiming... aiming...... He releases the arrow without warning and...... ah, well.

It hit the target generally speaking, but bulls-eye is something else entirely. ]

Tch.

I think you're still holding it too much like it's a gun.

[The correction is meant to be gentle... and really, Sakura probably shouldn't speak at all, she knows nothing about firearms, but...]

May I try?

Sure, I'm curious about your results as well.

[ He hands the crossbow over without hesitation. ]

[George will likely see what Sakura means. The way she handles the "barrel" of the crossbow is incorrect, George had the right idea about that, but her overall posture is what ultimately compensates when she shoots. They're both sitting at opposite ends of a short spectrum.

It's closer to the bullseye - slightly. Without a word, she hands the crossbow over so George might try again]

[ Without any spoken announcement this seems to have turned into a contest of sorts. This time he puts the arrow in himself and then tries to adapt some of the way Sakura carried herself for his own shot.

The aiming progress takes even longer as he tries to find the best way to shift. When he finally lets go, the arrow goes... pretty much the same distance from the bullseye that Sakura's did, even if on a different part of the target circle. From here it's hard to tell if it's closer or farther than hers for real because it went in slightly skewed.

... not embarrassing at least, George concludes silently and hands the bow back. ]

[it seems they're both showing improvement. Sakura initially doesn't see it as a competition so much as a sharing of skill - her competence increases alongside with George's, as they mimic each other's movements and progress. A few arrows in, and they're both creeping closer to the center.

... Though towards the end, there is still that thought which pops into her head: Who will hit the bullseye first?

When she gets the crossbow again, there's a shift in her demeanor. A subtle shift, but the way she holds herself and the crossbow makes it very clear: she's going to try and beat him.

... But such a shame, the arrow hits in the red, not the yellow center. She's forced to pass the crossbow back to George]
