Week 5.

WEEK 5 Another week has passed; another two people have died. Tsubasa Hanekawa and Nachetanya Loei Piena Augustra have joined the ranks of the deceased. Whatever you may have thought about them in the end, one thing hovers heavy over the group: the fact that neither their compassion nor their ambition was enough to keep them alive in here. Is yours? Saturday is given to regrouping and rest; the static blares out early on Sunday, but at least there are no bodies to find today - it seems you're safe for now. The night before wasn't necessarily a peaceful one, however; you'll probably feel a bit groggy when you wake up, and it seems you've regained something that you didn't realize you'd lost... And of course, with another successful trial comes a new addition to the building, another corridor opening up on the west side of the building. The doors leading to it branch off of the hallways leading to the second and fourth sections of the building; have those doors always been there? You can't remember... It's a new week. Of course, that means you've been here for over a month, and your stay doesn't seem to be coming to a close yet. PATIENTS REMAINING: 22

[Hm? What a strange question out of nowhere. Still, Rin answers without hesitation.]

I'll win the Holy Grail War.

[enhancements]

[And that certainly is an answer, isn't it.]

Tell me about it...? This...Holy Grail War.

Hmm. Can you tell me why you're interested?

[enhancements]

Because I've never heard of such a thing.

I don't imagine I need more reason than that.

[heritrix]

[What a smart response. She could point out that obviously she meant why he asked the question in the first place, before she gave him her reply. But she thinks this might be Wesker's way of being cheeky? She's not sure. Either way, the answer to that question was fine. Rin looks strangely pleased by it, actually.]

It's a mage's war that's held routinely in my city, once every sixty years. Or typically it would. The Fourth war was ten years ago, but the Fifth that I'm participating in now came early.

[See, you're starting to understand him, Rin. Sort of, anyway.]

Might I ask what the purpose of it is?

[heritrix]

It's a competition. No one's won it thus far, but if executed properly the Holy Grail will appear. The Grail has the power to so something we mages can't. Without bogging you down with the technicalities, it's an omnipotent wish-granting device than can produce a miracle.

[...Yes that's the least technical version.]

[...In fairness, that sounds less overly complicated and more kind of stupid, as far as Wesker is concerned.]

I've never heard of it being used quite like that. But then, we don't really have much reason to believe that something like that truly exists in the first place.

Well, it's not the real artifact. I assume that's the same as it is in your world, in that no one living has seen it or knows if it truly exists, despite the church's best efforts to find it.

[enhancements]

...Something like that, yes.

But you're certain that this Grail War will work the way you believe it will?

[heritrix]

Mm. Going by my memories the odds are against me right now, but fighting even when you think you'll lose is a fool's mission. Knowing your limits and when to act cautiously is one thing, but not believing in yourself is the surest way to die.

[enhancements]

[...i mean, he kind of meant "are you sure that winning a magical slapfight is going to result in a holy relic that may or may not exist suddenly deciding to appear so you can make a fucking wish on it" but you know what, it's not as though he didn't give a completely sideways answer earlier himself.]

Normally I'd say that's overly optimistic, but right now I'm not inclined to argue against it.

Either way, my initial answer to you probably only counts if the Holy Grail War isn't already over and I just forgot. So I might have to come up with a new answer for you, depending.

[enhancements]

[That kind of gets him to go quiet for a moment.]

Hopefully it works out favorably for you, either way.

[Hmm...]

What about you, Wesker. What are your plans?

[enhancements]

I haven't decided yet.

[And that's said easily enough, blank though he's being about it.]

Right now, it looks like "anything I want" is the most immediate answer.

[heritrix]

Maybe I'm reading too much into it, but it sounds like that bugs you.

[enhancements]

...Perhaps, slightly.

[He shrugs once that's out there, though.]

I've always been goal-oriented. Having no discernible path is a bit troubling, simply because it's been a long time since things allowed for something like that.

But the world changes, and we change with it. It'll be fine in time.

[heritrix]

[That's the impression she got of him, yeah.]

That's the proper attitude.

[Rin folds her hands behind her back.]

You know what you should do, too? Go on a vacation. If you take a month and try new things, you're sure to find inspiration for your next goal somewhere.

[enhancements]

[Mm.]

...For the time being, I'm just focusing on the game at hand. That's enough for me, I think.

[heritrix]

Fair enough. We're not really in a situation where we can afford to look past more than one Friday at a time.

[enhancements]

[The sound that gets out of him is soft, but it's assenting, at least.]

It's as I've said before - I intend to leave this place alive.
