Week 5.

WEEK 5

Another week has passed; another two people have died. Tsubasa Hanekawa and Nachetanya Loei Piena Augustra have joined the ranks of the deceased. Whatever you may have thought about them in the end, one thing hovers heavy over the group: the fact that neither their compassion nor their ambition was enough to keep them alive in here.

Is yours?

Saturday is given to regrouping and rest; the static blares out early on Sunday, but at least there are no bodies to find today - it seems you're safe for now. The night before wasn't necessarily a peaceful one, however; you'll probably feel a bit groggy when you wake up, and it seems you've regained something that you didn't realize you'd lost...

And of course, with another successful trial comes a new addition to the building, another corridor opening up on the west side of the building. The doors leading to it branch off of the hallways leading to the second and fourth sections of the building; have those doors always been there? You can't remember...

It's a new week. Of course, that means you've been here for over a month, and your stay doesn't seem to be coming to a close yet.

A bit arrogant to consider your own world "current society" with that in mind, isn't it?

[It's not said in all seriousness, however; there's a bit less of an edge to it, at least, than there has been so far.]

... I imagine the same goes for the current society of any world that hasn't already dabbled with the technology, no?

By the way, you're from a version of earth as well, aren't you? What's the year?

I was under the assumption that it was 2002 when I arrived here. However, my memories have placed the year as being closer to 2012.

10 years is a long time to just suddenly lose.

But if 2012 is really the year you're from, our worlds are head to head in time.

[ He didn't really expect someone from a parallel version of the exact same year. ]

I'm almost tempted to ask how things are going for the lot of you.

No towns were wiped out in recent history, so probably better than your world...?

Though we're currently fighting an alien that can control anyone who gets in touch with water and that's... awkward.

[ He also fell off a boat in that memory, so that may or may not end well for him? Ha, ha, he'd rather not think about it. ]

I can imagine as much.

[...That's...charming, truly, good lord.

That said, he's quiet for a moment, before just- ]

There was a viral outbreak about a decade ago, in that city I told you about. Incurable, with an estimated survival rate of one in ten million. For the rest of the population, death would come within anywhere from five minutes to a few hours after infection, depending on how it was spread.

Obviously, something that potent couldn't be allowed to thrive. Letting it spread to the outside world would be unthinkable. So we sanitized the area with a five-kiloton tactical nuclear device.

[ If all of that is really the truth, then George has to grudgingly admit he can respect Wesker a bit more. ]

Though if you are asking about my 2012, I assume the aftereffects of this event have yet to settle?

Given the sort of event we're discussing, I'd think it would be more surprising if it had.

Certainly.

No more viral outbreaks though? If the illness came to be naturally instead of artificially, I imagine it's not as localized as one would wish.

Unfortunately, it wasn't entirely contained, no. We did what we could, but ultimately the virus had some help. Someone began deliberately encouraging the spread of the disease, unleashing it upon the population in an act of bioterrorism.

Considering the ease with which it spreads and its high fatality rate, this is why I say compassion has no place in the world anymore. Hesitation will lead people to their deaths; if they're incredibly fortunate, it will only be their own.

You could argue that the elimination of the affected is an act of compassion in itself - it brings about the best possible outcome, all else is stupidity masked as kindness and optimism.
