Week 5.

WEEK 5 Another week has passed; another two people have died. Tsubasa Hanekawa and Nachetanya Loei Piena Augustra have joined the ranks of the deceased. Whatever you may have thought about them in the end, one thing hovers heavy over the group: the fact that neither their compassion nor their ambition was enough to keep them alive in here. Is yours? Saturday is given to regrouping and rest; the static blares out early on Sunday, but at least there are no bodies to find today - it seems you're safe for now. The night before wasn't necessarily a peaceful one, however; you'll probably feel a bit groggy when you wake up, and it seems you've regained something that you didn't realize you'd lost... And of course, with another successful trial comes a new addition to the building, another corridor opening up on the west side of the building. The doors leading to it branch off of the hallways leading to the second and fourth sections of the building; have those doors always been there? You can't remember... It's a new week. Of course, that means you've been here for over a month, and your stay doesn't seem to be coming to a close yet. PATIENTS REMAINING: 22

Neither. [ He reaches over to pick up one of the white pawns and turn it over in his hand. These pieces are as smooth as they look.

He should've known. ] It seemed like this way suited you better.

[aspiringly]

Is that right? How considerate of you.

[Either color would have been fine with him, but black... well, maybe it suits him in a way. He doesn't particularly mind if he doesn't always get the first move. Anyways, now that they're all set up...]

What you're holding in your hand is a pawn. Although they may appear weak at first glance, they are also the piece that holds the greatest potential, with their collective efforts being crucial to victory. With no other option but to advance and meet the enemy, they can only move forward one or two squares depending on their position.

[With a demonstration here, just to make it clear.]

However, they cannot capture by charging head-on; instead, they can only act opportunistically to strike.

[Annnnd another demonstration.]

[ That's an indulgent way of describing pawns. Or is it supposed to be romantic? Whichever it is, it doesn't make much of an impression on Mikoto beyond how strange it is.

He sets the pawn in his hand down on the board—he even puts it back where it came from. ]

As much as I enjoyed hearing you prattle on about the significance of pawns, I'm afraid I'll have to pass. [ Because he's impatient, he doesn't wait for McGillis to respond to him. He picks up one of his own pawns and moves it forward. ] Let's go already.

[aspiringly]

[There's a slight raise of the eyebrow when Mikoto rebuffs his offer. Pawns were one of the more complex pieces, so the longer explanation was warranted, in his mind. Adding a little flourish never really hurt, did it?

Well, in any case. Even as Mikoto takes his turn, McGillis won't move to follow up quite yet.]

Are you certain you want to start without knowing all of the rules?

[Honestly, it's his funeral if he loses because of that, but there's not much point in winning against someone who has no idea what they're doing, either.]

[ How long does McGillis need to drag this out? Sure, the pieces don't look the same but it's fine, right? All he needs to do is see how McGillis moves them and copy that.

Then again, that sounds like too much trouble too. ]

Do you wanna explain?

[aspiringly]

Rather than "want to", it would be more accurate to say that it wouldn't be much of a match without you understanding the basics. I can be more concise with my explanations if you wish. However, if you insist that we start immediately, then I'll comply.

[preciousking]

Shut up. [ This comes out more grumpy than scathing. He can't say he wants to hear the explanation, especially not now. What McGillis basically just said is he's a moron.

But.

Fine.

He plucks his pawn up and puts it back in place. Go ahead and explain while he's sulking. ]

[aspiringly]

[Excuse, he was being perfectly factual, gosh. (He may also think that Mikoto is kind of a moron, but that's another matter altogether.) Nevertheless, the fact that the move was retracted is enough of a cue for McGillis to start talking. With that said, he will actually keep his word by keeping his explanation short as humanly possible and when all's said and done, he'll be looking at Mikoto to make his opening move.]

Now then, let's start.

[ It may not look like it but Mikoto's paying close attention to McGillis and his explanations. He's still not sold on the concept of chess, or even the theory, but something about the way he was taunted earlier isn't sitting well with him. If it were more direct, maybe he'd brush it off.

That's what he usually does. ]

Yeah. [ For the second time today, he picks up his pawn and moves it to E4. He's not about this strategy shit but it's obvious to him the middle is important. ]

[aspiringly]

[It's a fairly conventional move, at least. McGillis isn't sure how much thought Mikoto put into it, but it could have been a lot worse so he'll match it by moving a pawn to E5.]
