WEEK 5
Another week has passed; another two people have died. Tsubasa Hanekawa and Nachetanya Loei Piena Augustra have joined the ranks of the deceased. Whatever you may have thought about them in the end, one thing hovers heavy over the group: the fact that neither their compassion nor their ambition was enough to keep them alive in here.

Saturday is given to regrouping and rest; the static blares out early on Sunday, but at least there are no bodies to find today - it seems you're safe for now. The night before wasn't necessarily a peaceful one, however; you'll probably feel a bit groggy when you wake up, and it seems you've regained something that you didn't realize you'd lost...

And of course, with another successful trial comes a new addition to the building, another corridor opening up on the west side of the building. The doors leading to it branch off of the hallways leading to the second and fourth sections of the building; have those doors always been there? You can't remember...

It's a new week. Of course, that means you've been here for over a month, and your stay doesn't seem to be coming to a close yet.

Mm... Well remember how I told you I had a memory from February 11? That was the first one I received, actually. Today's was of the 9th and the 10th.

In other words I remember everything from where my memories ended at the time we arrived here, to that memory of the 11th. Other than learning how Caster stole Saber, it was uneventful.

... How would Caster be capable of that?

[A little hurriedly]

Is Senpai alright?

I told you he is already, remember? He was wounded, but he was already able to run about in the first memory I received, which came the day after. So he's fine.

[No he's not, he's leapt in front of Saber's sword and got stabbed in the shoulder keeping Rin from being impaled. But Rin also remembers treating that injury about three times, so she can say for certain Shirou isn't about to die anytime soon. Sakura doesn't need to worry about that.]

[That's only barely good enough for Sakura. She wants details, updates, play-by-plays if it comes to it, and--

He's not your Shirou]

... Right. I... I remember now. You did tell me that.

[She folds her hands on her lap] Then he's out of the War.

...He still wants to fight.

[Stiffening briefly, but it passes as quickly as it comes]

... Of course he does. [With a small laugh] I don't know why I ever thought differently.

[She actually smiles at that, but there's a hint of exasperation at the edges.]

Of course. The Shirou Emiya you know would be the same way.

Yours wants to be a super hero, yes...?

I never asked, but I wouldn't be surprised.

[Actually—]

Get this. When I asked him why he wanted to learn about magic, he told me he never found it fun! [Irritate just recalling it, Rin huffs and folds her arms.] Despite not enjoying it, he wanted to learn anyways because he thought if he could use magecraft, he could help others.

[...Rin sounds really annoyed about this, actually, but if Sakura could see her face there she would find real concern in her eyes.]

[...]

You dislike he isn't doing it for himself?

[She speaks pleasantly, like she understands where Rin is coming from and only wants that added verification]

[In her mind's eye, Rin sees a hill.]
[She sees death, and she sees hell—]
Of course I dislike it. [She speaks stiffly.] Putting aside that to me it's like anathema, that's no way to live. He spends so much time thinking about others that he never thinks of himself.

I imagine a person like that can only grow up to be profoundly unhappy.

... He could stand to do more things for his own sake, yes.

[Putting aside that his insistence to care for/protect everyone is one reason she loves him]

But do you really think he'll be unhappy like that?

...I'm not the proper person to ask, most likely.

[The quiet in the chapel is punctuated suddenly sigh and a faint pop; Rin stretches her arms up high, and her stiff shoulders feel just a pinch of relief.]

We've seen each other in the halls from time to time, but I don't know Emiya-kun on a deep level. I'm not a psychic and nor do I own a crystal ball, so it's not like I can see his future, either.

But you care about him.

[Her tone lacks judgment; Sakura simply recites what she thinks she's seen over the years, and the words Rin hasn't quite said during their current conversation]

[...]

Sakura. [Rin brushes a long lock of hair back over her shoulder.] I've been dishonest with you.

[A hand clenches tight over her heart and squeezes until there's no breath in her lungs. Sakura doesn't think she wants to--

No. Have courage. Be more like Nee-san.

A tiny breath. Sakura straightens.]

What's wrong?

Just because of a lie, something has to be wrong?

[Rin glances to the side, smiling like this is a joke.] Because it's nothing so extreme; I imagine you've omitted facts from your story as well.

[But Rin isn't cornering Sakura about such things at the moment. Still smiling, she looks back to empty pulpit.]

Saber isn't the only Servant Caster has taken.

[... Somehow, Sakura feels set up, and it turns her shoulders rigid. She glances elsewhere out of childish spite.]

Oh? Who else did Caster take?

Mm, well to start if you didn't know it, she's the Master of Assassin. Breaking the rules, a Servant summoned a Servant.

[The smile has left her face, but crossing one leg over the other, Rin speaks with a casualness that belies her anger.]

So that was one Servant in her pocket, and by stealing Saber she had two. When my Archer joined her, that made three.

[There we go. There it is.]

[A sharp intake of breath that she can't hide]

Three...?

[No, wait--]

Your Servant joined her? Voluntarily?

Did I not speak clearly? [Rin tilts her head.] I thought that was implicit.

[In any case, she sees no reason to repeat herself.]

But I'm not out of the Holy Grail War yet, either. Like a certain person we know, I don't know when to quit. Neither of us possess Servants now, so this makes Emiya-kun my only ally.

[She says this with a degree of finality, like she expects Sakura to read in between the lines.]

[Can she read between the lines? Will she? Sakura turns her gaze back at Rin and tilts her head like a mirror]

Allies, is it? That is typical of Senpai.

Will you both share the Grail together, then?

We'll cross that bridge when we get to it.

[Rin is turning on the asshole qualities extra hard today, it seems like.]

[... There's only one more question Sakura wants to ask]

And at that bridge... would you destroy the alliance in order to win?
