Week 5.

WEEK 5 Another week has passed; another two people have died. Tsubasa Hanekawa and Nachetanya Loei Piena Augustra have joined the ranks of the deceased. Whatever you may have thought about them in the end, one thing hovers heavy over the group: the fact that neither their compassion nor their ambition was enough to keep them alive in here. Is yours? Saturday is given to regrouping and rest; the static blares out early on Sunday, but at least there are no bodies to find today - it seems you're safe for now. The night before wasn't necessarily a peaceful one, however; you'll probably feel a bit groggy when you wake up, and it seems you've regained something that you didn't realize you'd lost... And of course, with another successful trial comes a new addition to the building, another corridor opening up on the west side of the building. The doors leading to it branch off of the hallways leading to the second and fourth sections of the building; have those doors always been there? You can't remember... It's a new week. Of course, that means you've been here for over a month, and your stay doesn't seem to be coming to a close yet. PATIENTS REMAINING: 22

Well, most of them, at least. I'm really lucky to be there.

What about you? What's the school you go to like?

[heritrix]

Well in Japan, compulsory education ends after middle school, so all attendees apply to get in, as you did with your school. I like Homurahara a lot, myself. It's within walking distance for me, and the walk is refreshing. It helps me wake up in the mornings.

[barehands]

You don't have to attend high school? That seems so weird to me... Ah, but I bet it helps that everyone who does go is really motivated! Was your school hard to get into, Rin?

[heritrix]

It was easy, but I overheard other students complaining about it.

[Of course the student with the highest grades in school wouldn't find it a challenge...]

[barehands]

So it was just easy to you, huh? That sounds about right.

[She's pretty smart, after all.]

[heritrix]

Those sorts of things don't give me difficulty.

How about you? How did yours go?

[barehands]

That's really impressive.

The entrance exam was really hard, yeah. Since I was trying for a scholarship, I had to study for a really long time.

[heritrix]

Your family must be proud of you.

[barehands]

[Something in that statement gives her pause, her expression growing tighter, before she nods.]

My mom is, I think.

[heritrix]

[There's that discomfort again, like the last time they spoke about this subject. Rin considers her words, but the approach is obvious.]

I'm proud of you.

[barehands]

[She was looking down at the floor, but that surprises her enough that she glances towards Rin, eyes widening slightly. Then she looks down again, but this time it's with a gentle smile as she starts to blush lightly.]

...Thank you.

[The words are simple, but it's clear how touched she sounds.]

[heritrix]

[Rin simply bumps shoulders with the other girl affectionately, smiling back. There's no need to thank her for something like that, silly.]

[barehands]

[That gets a giggle out of her, and she looks towards the ground. This isn't something she's discussed with anyone else, but with Rin, she finds she doesn't mind that much.]

I got the acceptance letter before my mom was hospitalized, and she was really excited then. So... I think she must be proud of me.

[heritrix]

[Oh...]

It's not good, is it? Your mother's condition.

[If it were, even hospitalized Rose would be able to know her mother's thoughts for herself. So either it's very bad, or her mother has passed.]

[barehands]

[She shakes her head.]

We're allowed to visit her sometimes, and the last time we did... It seemed like she had a little more energy, at least. It was nice.

[heritrix]

[Rin frowns, something pained tugging at her face. So that means it's just Rose and her siblings now, huh. No wonder the incentive hit her hard.]

How long has she been hospitalized?

[barehands]

It's been less than a year... I'm not sure exactly how long. Maybe ten months? She's in long term care.
