Week 5.

WEEK 5 Another week has passed; another two people have died. Tsubasa Hanekawa and Nachetanya Loei Piena Augustra have joined the ranks of the deceased. Whatever you may have thought about them in the end, one thing hovers heavy over the group: the fact that neither their compassion nor their ambition was enough to keep them alive in here. Is yours? Saturday is given to regrouping and rest; the static blares out early on Sunday, but at least there are no bodies to find today - it seems you're safe for now. The night before wasn't necessarily a peaceful one, however; you'll probably feel a bit groggy when you wake up, and it seems you've regained something that you didn't realize you'd lost... And of course, with another successful trial comes a new addition to the building, another corridor opening up on the west side of the building. The doors leading to it branch off of the hallways leading to the second and fourth sections of the building; have those doors always been there? You can't remember... It's a new week. Of course, that means you've been here for over a month, and your stay doesn't seem to be coming to a close yet. PATIENTS REMAINING: 22

Desire is one of many things that make the world run.

[Rin sticks her pinky in the book to serve as a bookmark for the Hercules page to search for a few others.]

I've also encountered this person [Medusa the Gorgon] as the Rider class Servant, and... [flipping, flipping; this section likely isn't as long as the other two, whose names have great renown:] This woman, as Caster.

[Princess Medea, hailed as a witch. Rin's eyes are notably glassier referring to her page, though she didn't look particularly happy on Medusa's either.]

They must have left a great impact on you, to have seen figures from legends.

[heritrix]

These three are enemies, although I expect I'll try to make an alliance with Berserker's Master.

[She's not sure on this, but based on her memories, she's positive that's the next step she'll take.]

Anyways, I've spent ten years reading these legends in preparation, so if there's a particular figure you're interested in, I can tell you about them. In a collection of mythologies like this, the details are bound to be vague.

[ He seems to consider the answer to this very carefully. ]

Do you know about Orpheus?

[heritrix]

[She brightens. For a moment she thought Ryoji might retreat into himself.]

Of course. He was a companion of two of the legends I just showed you, after all.

[She'll flip back to them, briefly: Hercules and Medea are the ones she means specifically. Aside from this she never references the book once describing Orpheus, reciting everything from memory.]

They fought alongside each other as members of Jason's Argonauts. The only weapon Orpheus possessed was a lyre, but he was such a talented musician it was said he could charm all living things and even stones with his beautiful songs. He even bested the Sirens, who would have ended the Argonauts journey then and there without him.

[ As she's telling the story he visibly warms, a small smile on his face. Unlike the one he greeted her with, it's a genuine one. ]

Mmm, that sounds like him.

[heritrix]

[Both elbows on the table, Rin is literally doing the /chinhands thing. It's nice seeing Ryoji more like his old self.]

Do you have soft spot for his story? I bet I can guess why.

[cadmiums]

What's your guess?

[heritrix]

He was a man who journeyed into the underworld to save the love of his life.

[cadmiums]

[ The easy answer here is "yes". ]

That sounds like him too.

[heritrix]

You're really familiar with him. I'm surprised. You almost make it sound like you know not his deeds, but the man personally.

[cadmiums]

No, it's not that. It's more like...I know someone who does, in a way.

[heritrix]

Oh?

[She just claimed to know some of these guys herself, so she's not as surprised as some might be. It has more to do with:]

I didn't realize legends like him were an active presence in your world.

[cadmiums]

It's not really the legends themselves: more what they represent, what they...personify.

[ A beat. ]

I didn't know either.

[heritrix]

That's something you remembered today, I take it.

[cadmiums]

[ ... ]

Yeah.

[heritrix]

That doesn't bode well for your world.

[cadmiums]

[ He freezes, his entire body rigid for a few moments. Have his eyes always been such a bright blue? But then he relaxes and reaches for his scarf like he tends to do, though it doesn't seem like he's going to respond. ]

...

[heritrix]

[That makes her feel like she's on the right track, so she's going to continue.]

On their own, Orpheus and Persephone have stirring tales. They're strong heroes, and likeable. But the only common thread their legends share is the connection to the underworld.

[But he showed her Persephone's page. Whoever he was looking for in the T section bothered him more.]

[cadmiums]

Is that so?

[heritrix]

Ryoji, once when I was acting strangely, you said you'd understand if I didn't want to tell you my problems, but that you would gladly listen if I did.

I didn't take that offer, but a few days after Gant's trial, I wished I had.

[cadmiums]

Why did you change your mind?

[heritrix]

[Her smile is bittersweet, and her vision awash with green. An early morning, waking up on a park bench.]

I want to live a life without regrets. That would have been a regret, win or lose.

[cadmiums]

I feel-felt, similar. It's a little more complicated now.

[heritrix]

So suddenly it's unimportant?
