Week 5.

WEEK 5 Another week has passed; another two people have died. Tsubasa Hanekawa and Nachetanya Loei Piena Augustra have joined the ranks of the deceased. Whatever you may have thought about them in the end, one thing hovers heavy over the group: the fact that neither their compassion nor their ambition was enough to keep them alive in here. Is yours? Saturday is given to regrouping and rest; the static blares out early on Sunday, but at least there are no bodies to find today - it seems you're safe for now. The night before wasn't necessarily a peaceful one, however; you'll probably feel a bit groggy when you wake up, and it seems you've regained something that you didn't realize you'd lost... And of course, with another successful trial comes a new addition to the building, another corridor opening up on the west side of the building. The doors leading to it branch off of the hallways leading to the second and fourth sections of the building; have those doors always been there? You can't remember... It's a new week. Of course, that means you've been here for over a month, and your stay doesn't seem to be coming to a close yet. PATIENTS REMAINING: 22

Of course. That would be rather cold of me otherwise, wouldn't it?

[The girl on the monitor, Rachel, she suddenly looks up from the floor as if she suddenly heard someone talking about her... but, it's just a coincidence as she's done this now about three times since Danny started watching the video a few times today.

Still...]

That familiar despair, despite being somewhere else entirely now... [...] But once we're reunited again, I can give her all of the affection she deserves, that she was never given before. This time will be different...

[Rachel stares at the monitor for a few seconds longer, and then the feed switches to someone else. And just like that, it seems like whatever hold her appearance had over Danny is gone as his attention leaves the monitor completely to focus entirely on Kogami.]

I take it that you came to check on your own hostage as well?

Is she an orphan?

[Or something similar he's thinking. Honestly, he's struggling why he's acting this way with this girl.]

In any case, yes. I wanted to check on Tsunemori. Though she might be the one keeping everyone else sane, knowing her.

[And actively working towards a solution. She's never been the kind of girl to sit around.]

Yes, she is. Her parents died recently under... ah, unfortunate circumstances.

[as for Tsunemori...]

It sounds like your friend will be a reliable asset for everyone gathered there with her, if she can keep the peace.

Unfortunate circumstances, huh?

[Those are terms used for 'probably murder'.]

And yes, she will be. Though I wouldn't be surprised if anyone fought with her. Once she has an opinion formed, she refuses to back down. Stubborn, but that's what I like about her-- she's got one hell of a backbone.

There's still an ongoing investigation, but based on what I've been told, it sounds like a case of domestic abuse that escalated into both of the parents winding up dead in the aftermath.

[So yes, very murdery unfortunate circumstances]

That's harsh. So that's why she looks like she keeps to herself, then?

[She at least looks like she's kind of just out of it. He feels pretty bad for her now.]

Indeed. It's saddening, really, thinking that she had to endure something like that.

[... Well. Until now, anyway.]

Has she been improving a bit under your care?

I'd like to think so: it took quite a while, but she's opened up more in our therapy sessions, and has even managed a smile for me once or twice...

That's good, getting through to her like that, especially with her background.

Yes! And I'm hoping that, if I do take her in, I'll be able to see her smile more often. She did say she wanted a family, after all, so I think it would make her happy to finally be a part of one with someone that she's able to trust.

Why are you so keen on making her your family?

Isn't she just your patient, though?

[He doesn't go to a therapist in hopes one of them will adopt him...]

She is, but her chances of being adopted or going to a good foster home or is extremely low right now due to the circumstances surrounding the murder of her parents.

[He thinks for a moment...

Was there a chance she was involved in that murder?

... Technically, yes. The official story is that her Father killed her Mother in a drunken rage after an argument they had regarding a stray animal Rachel brought home. He then tried to kill Rachel, but she shot him in self-defense using the gun her Mother had hidden in a drawer somewhere in the house.

Yeah he can see why...]

She really had no choice, then, at least if she wanted to live.

Exactly. Despite the knowledge that it was in self-defense though, the other children and adults at the shelter she's currently staying in have expressed concerns about whether or not she's a danger to them, which makes placing her in a foster home or up for adoption difficult with people spreading gossip about it as a result.

[Though to be fair, there are... reasons for them feeling that way.]

That stigma won't leave, unfortunately. Whether intentional or self-defense, I'm sure she'll always be deemed a killer.

[Poor thing...]

Is that what made you care for her, then? Her situation? I imagine getting to know her helped, too.

Yes... while we're not the exact same, I suppose you could say that I relate a little, in regards to having people treat you a certain way for something that isn't one's fault.

I imagine your mother's death didn't help either.

No, I can't say that it did. If anything it just seemed to prove everyone right that she shouldn't have given birth to someone like me.

[In an almost uncharacteristic action, Kogami places a gentle hand on Danny's head and pats it.]

I don't think that proved anything. At least I'm glad I've met you.
